Give A Shit

London College of Communication
2014

BACKGROUND

London College of Communication (LCC) has such bad toilet conditions that students avoid using the toilets as much as possible. LCC has these horrible conditions for three reasons: firstly, the university needs to repair many of the toilets; secondly, more custodial staff need to be hired; thirdly, the students are careless in the toilets and need to clean up after themselves better.

BRIEF

Create an intervention to solve an issue in your local environment.

IDEA

A small group of us found the grossest toilet in LCC and used it to disgust the people of LCC into making change. Posters and stickers were placed all over the college encouraging students and staff to take better care when flushing and to report broken toilets. Placemats were made and distributed in the university’s café and canteen, where lunch goers were confronted with the toilet issue.

RESULT

The intervention really got people disgusted. Students and staff were talking about the toilets, and our intervention, openly. Although change did not happen immediately, toilets were being flushed more. About four months after the Give A Shit intervention, LCC began renovations on some of their worst toilets in the college.
